Digitalisation and artificial intelligence applied to the justice system in cuba: benefits and challenges

Abstract

: Technology facilitates, through a collection of diverse tools, the use, creation, management and exchange of information, based on a body of practical and scientific knowledge. In this context, the dizzying and supposedly revolutionary advances of digitisation and AI in the judicial field are a cause for both rejoicing and concern. Rejoicing, because we see in both a tool with which we can solve conflicts and problems of the most varied kinds. Concern, because their irruption produces obvious reasons for mistrust and suspicion along with interesting challenges to be faced. Clarity in legal frameworks, transparency in the algorithms and models used, as well as effective human supervision, are key elements to ensure a responsible and reliable use of digitalisation and AI. The Cuban justice system is currently advancing in the implementation of the digitisation of some of its processes, in line with existing technological developments. In this sense, the purpose of this research is to assess the benefits and risks for the justice system of digitisation and the use of AI in general, and specifically for Cuba, in the criminal justice system.
